Ostrich Egg Globes

As I started preparing eggshells for drawing my Memory Walks, I serendipitously came across this article at Hyperallergic about how these beautifully carved ostrich egg globes might be the earliest depiction of the Americas.

What is particularly striking to me is how the globes were fashioned out of two halves of an ostrich egg shells.  No chance of pricking holes with a thumbtack, carving out a larger hole and blowing out the contents of an ostrich egg.
